An Island of Beauty

Insulting Puerto Rico during National Hispanic Heritage Month? Talk about missing the mark.

It so happens that we are in National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and honor the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It’s meant to highlight the diverse backgrounds, achievements, and stories that make up the vibrant Hispanic community in the United States.

What sense did it make to offer up this insult to Puerto Rico? None at all. It’s not just an insult to Puerto Ricans but to the very essence of what Hispanic Heritage Month represents.

Puerto Ricans have contributed enormously to American culture, from literature and politics to music, dance, and beyond. Puerto Rico’s influence is woven into the fabric of American life. Recognizing this is crucial. Insulting Puerto Rico or any single people undermines the purpose of National Hispanic Heritage Month, showing a lack of understanding and appreciation for the very people the month is meant to honor.

In short, it’s not just incongruous—it’s counterproductive and disrespectful. National Hispanic Heritage Month should be a time of unity and recognition, not division and disparagement.

Let’s get it right. It’s time to stop excluding and time to celebrate, respect, and honor the diverse Hispanic heritage that enriches us all.
